Maternity Fashion Controversy

I recently saw on the news that Forever 21 has launched a maternity line that's available online and in a few states...which don't happen to include any near me- [insert sad face here], and it's actually really cute.

But it's started some controversy saying that it's target audience is pregnant teens...
See CBS News article here.

Many parents have been quoted stating that it's not something they want to see in stores. However, my favorite quote though has to be this: "Based on the research I know, I don't think girls get pregnant so they can wear cute clothes," said Steven Kirn, executive director of the David F. Miller Retailing Education and Research Center at the University of Florida. (quote from here) And I have to agree!

So, what do you think? Personally I welcome any affordable maternity line that is actually cute and fits me right! I'm not a teen, I'm a married pregnant woman in my mid-20s and in my opinion this line is targeting my demographics :) And on that note, I'm going to order me this:
however I won't be wearing heels with it, kinda unrealistic for this pregnant gal! :)

  1. Maybe those parents should spend more time worrying about their daughters....and not what the store carries!

  2. I think this is BRILLIANT! When I got pregnant I was 19 years old! I have always loved clothes and fashion, and refused to stop just because I was pregnant! I luckily did not need pregnancy jeans, and was able to just buy a larger size in my clothes but did buy a few maternity tops! I refused to wear anything that said "hot mama" or "baby on board".. so that made it difficult! I ended up finding a maternity gap, and bought some plain colored t's, and a few cute tops at Target.. but let me tell you I would have died and gone to heaven if there was a f21 with a maternity section!

    p.s. I agree with neely!

  3. I think these clothes are really cute!! If parents would teach their kids about safe sex then they wouldn't ever be an issue. All of the places that are maternity could be considered for teen moms but just because the name of the store is Foever21 they are getting scrap about it. I love all of there clothes and if I were pregos, I would shop there and I am not even a teen. Good article~

  8. I just noticed your post and I had no idea either. I think that women will want to wear fashionable clothes whether they are pregnant or not and I doubt anyone will get pregnant just to wear these. They could just shop at Forever 21 and their normal clothes line - if they do happen to get pregnant well at least they have a choice now. I'm off to browse online now...

  9. Hmmm...targeting pregnant teens. that is kind of strange I guess. But then again, it is a reality to many teens do become pregnant these days and they will need maternity clothes. So what is wrong with them being fashionable? Not really sure where I stand on this - but atleast you have a place to get some cute materinity clothes! :)
