let's talk weather

Living in Florida makes you well aware of hurricanes and potential storms in our vicinity. But my problem isn't with storms it's with... the weatherman.

This is what's going on today storm-wise:

I'm not by any means a hurricane expert but I have experienced my far share of them. I survived the year of hurricanes that wreaked havoc on Florida in fall of 2004, have gone to more hurricane parties than I can count, and have probably missed at least a month of classes/school due to hurricane. I've lived in Florida my whole life but the rest of my family lives in Mississippi and Louisiana, yes that's right my entire family is in hurricane territory, we're no strangers to destruction and thankfully haven't been severely effected by any of the major hurricanes that have ventured into our cities.

But no matter how many hurricanes I experience or track online, I've never understood why weatherman are so excited about a hurricane coming. Seriously, what is good about a hurricane? Heavy rainfall? High winds? Storm surge? Oh yes dear weatherman these are all things that are wonderful and we would love to have happen to us....  um thanks but I'll pass! Nothing is good about a hurricane except for maybe a day off work. Today while watching the weather channel and the people on the weather channel were uber excited about the three storms out in the Atlantic. Hurricanes are like crack for weatherpeople. Well as the segment progressed, I was shocked to hear this..."hurricane igor was an almost perfect, beautiful hurricane." He was talking about how the hurricane was formed of course but still, a hurricane beautiful, I can't agree with that at all.

So my question for yall is do you think a hurricane is beautiful?

miscellany monday

Miscellany Monday @ lowercase letters

(1) I went through my shoes on Saturday. I was quite shocked when I laid out every shoe on the floor to see what all was in my closet. Half the shoes I never wear anymore, I'm secretly a pack rat. However, I bit the bullet and tossed about 1/3 of my shoes into a garage sale/giveaway pile. I now have a nice and organized shoe area in my closet. Man, it feels good to be organized! Now I just have to tackle my clothes, esp those that are hiding in the farthest area of the closet.

(2) We went to Barnes and Noble after dinner one night this weekend and had a lot of fun browsing through books. It was hard to pick just two books but I can't wait to get started on the ones I ended up with.

(3) It's been so hot this weekend that it wasn't remotely enjoyable to be outside, and today isn't any better. This summer is for sure to be a hot one and I'm not looking forward to it.

(4) My birthday is next weekend, June 20th, and I still have no big plans and that's perfectly fine with me since we're having a big 4th of July shindig at the beach that's gonna last a week that I'm stoked about!

(5) I'm thinking about a career change, or should I say job change since my current job isn't a career thing exactly... ohh decisions. I guess I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up haha.

Happy Earth Day!

Did you know that 40 years ago today was the first Earth Day ever!
A lot has changed with our Earth but there's some things we can do to help. Here's a few things I do to help curb my carbon footprint and help this planet we call home. (Find out your carbon footprint here)

Recycle!
I know you've been told this since grade school (remember the song?) It's a lot easier then you think and most cities have recycle cans just like trash cans so it's even easier for you. I have two trash cans in my kitchen one for cans & plastic (ours go together) and one for regular trash. It makes it easier for everyone to remember to recycle.
Buy Local
That can be either produce and products, in Tallahassee we have a group of locally businesses and services that encourage residents to shop local. You can visit them here, they have a cute slogan that is "Keep it sassy Tallahassee"
Bring Your Own Bags
They don't have to be special to that store either. Plus most reusable bags hold way more than most plastic bags so that means less trips from the car when you bring things in.

Do you have any Earth Day tips? Feel free to share them!

i hate you

Dear Pollen,
I'm sick of you invading my sinuses, causing my eyes to be blurring and ichy, and making me stuffy. I want you to leave. In the past you caused me to sneeze so much I chipped my tooth on the kitchen counter (I still remember that, I was 6 years old, how dare you!). You've been here for a week and you've exceded your welcome. You've caused me to sneeze non-stop through the Easter service (yes, I was that girl), which gave me no choice by to take medicine that knocked me out for hours. We had to delay Easter brunch to late lunch since I was out cold. Today you've infected everyone in my office. We all have ichy, watery eyes, chronic sneezing, and the sinus headaches, I'm sure we are all a joy to be around. As much as I love your distant relative Springtime, you are the unwelcomed 4th cousin once removed and it would be in your best interest to LEAVE immediately.

Sincerely,
one very allergic girl who want's to move to the beach

Check out your Allergy Forecast... evidently Florida is one of the worst places to be if you are allergic to pollen.
